FAQ

  • Who can apply?

We currently accept applications from visual artists working in any medium. We ask that applicants thoughtfully consider the unique setting of the residency and how their practice might engage with the natural landscape of the high desert.

  • When and how long is the residency?

Residency dates are scheduled collaboratively between Herron House and the selected artist following acceptance into the program. Each residency lasts for six nights.

  • Where is the residency located?

The residency takes place at The Graham Residence, a private mid-century modern home situated on twenty secluded acres in Yucca Valley, California—just outside Joshua Tree National Park.

  • What are travel requirements?

Artists are responsible for their own travel to and from Yucca Valley. A personal vehicle and valid driver’s license are required to access the property and navigate the surrounding area during the residency.

  • What facilities & resources are included?

The Graham Residence is a 1,250-square-foot steel-and-glass home featuring two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a spacious living area with panoramic desert views. Amenities include high-speed internet, laundry, a fully equipped kitchen, a hot tub, propane fire pit, outdoor shower, BBQ, and a solar-powered EV charger.

  • What does the artist program include?

Artists are responsible for bringing their own materials. While there is no formal studio on-site, the home and surrounding land are available as immersive, flexible spaces for making. Whether working within the interior spaces or outdoors in the high desert landscape, artists are encouraged to respond to the environment as part of their process.

  • What can I expect from the environment?

The Graham Residence is nestled among boulders, ancient junipers, desert oaks, and resilient piñon pines. This secluded high desert landscape is rich with native flora and fauna—quiet, alive, and deeply inspiring. Artists can expect a meditative environment that invites slowness, observation, and a deepened connection to land. We encourage residents to embrace the solitude and let the surroundings shape their practice.

  • Can I bring guests and/or pets?

The residency is intended to be a solo retreat—an opportunity for quiet, uninterrupted focus. As such, we are unable to accommodate guests or pets during your stay.

  • Are meals included?

Meals are not provided. However, residents have access to a fully equipped kitchen and are located within close driving distance to town for groceries, restaurants, and supplies.

  • What is the cost?

We ask that artists leave one work of art in return for their stay. The size and nature of the work will be determined after acceptance to the program.

  • What happens after I apply?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. If we feel your work is a strong fit for the program, we’ll be in touch within three weeks of your submission. Residency dates are scheduled based on availability.
